An Iconic F1 Legacy

Williams Racing, a storied name in Formula 1, has been a cornerstone of the sport since its inception in 1977.

In recent years, Williams has undergone a period of significant transformation. With new ownership and a renewed focus on performance, the team has steadily climbed the ranks. Strategic investments in infrastructure, technology, and talent acquisition have laid the foundation for future success.

Racing back to the front of the grid

Backed by new investors with a vision to return Williams to the top of the grid, the team embarked on an ambitious growth trajectory. To achieve their strategic goals, they needed to rapidly scale their team with top talent. That’s where Bond raced in!

Initially, Bond was brought in to complement Williams’ internal team of eight, enhancing hiring speed and volume to support their vision. Over time we have become an integral part of the Williams team, working onsite two days a week. In a fast-paced environment marked by constant change, Bond provides consistent, hands-on support to meet Williams’ evolving needs.

What started as a focus on early careers projects and confidential/executive hires quickly evolved into a broader hiring plan, including recruitment across several key business areas:

  • Technical
  • Engineering
  • E-sports
  • Vehicle Redesign
  • Business Services
  • Composites
  • Operations
  • Content
  • DPT

Finding the engineers of the future

Early career development was a new focus for Williams when Bond joined the team, but a recognised game changer for the future. After all, building the F1 car of the future means nurturing the talent of tomorrow. This initiative encompassed industrial placements, apprenticeships, and graduate programs.

Bond delivered three presentations aimed at guiding aspiring individuals on how to pursue a career at Williams, offering practical advice to support their journeys. Alongside this, Bond collaborated with universities to attract top talent and prepare future F1 engineers.

Mapping the whole grid & beyond

To hire in a market this small, you have to know all of it. Bond mapped Formula 1 end to end, building a picture of where the skills sat across the sport and who held them. In a paddock where everyone knows everyone, much of this hiring had to happen discreetly, which meant confidential search and a level of care that protected both the candidate and Williams.

That work went deepest on aerodynamics. We mapped the discipline down to individual skill sets, which teams they sat in, and how each organisation approached the problem differently, so Williams could see not just who was available but what a hire would bring with them. That intelligence fed directly into the redesign of the aerodynamics function and the hires that followed.

Building a function fit for the podium:

Bond remains committed to leaving a lasting impact on Williams’ HR team by enhancing their recruitment process and overall function.

Key initiatives include:

  • Candidate packs: Designed to showcase Williams’ culture and attract top-tier talent.
  • Hiring manager toolkits: Comprehensive training to equip hiring managers with the skills and knowledge needed for effective candidate assessment.
  • Candidate and hiring manager surveys: Used to gather valuable feedback and continuously refine the recruitment process.
  • Competitor analysis: Leveraged data analytics and competitor insights to inform strategic talent acquisition decisions.
  • Talent Mapping: Conducted a in-depth mapping of roles and salaries to ensure the best candidate matches for critical positions.
