Event Summary

 

The exciting birth of a new community chapter. Bringing together Boston’s best people function leaders, building the 0 -> 1’s and beyond in 50 – 300+ sized organizations.

This Scale chapter will co-exist with our Boston chapter. Drawing on the lessons of experienced leaders and alongside the trailblazers doing this for the first time in their careers.

From zero to IPO, they’ve made the mistakes, learned the lessons, and are building people strategies that scale, without burning out teams or breaking culture.

The event was a blend of:

Scaling with Soul

 

Christina Luconi | Chief People Innovator @ People Innovations 🚀

 

Christina brings a wealth of knowledge from scaling multiple businesses ‘with soul’ and is known in Boston for her time at Rapid7 where she took the brand from 75 people, all the way through IPO.

An emotive story teller, Christina spelt out the difference between “fluffy” culture and building something intentionally, that enables the business to achieve excellence.

She convinced the room why laying a cultural foundation, as early as possible, is the difference between existence and excellence.

 

She also boiled it down to 5 things you must do if you are at 100 – 300 people:

 

1) Define leadership expectations before you scale managers

2) Make values behavioural and measurable, not just inspirational

3) Remove misaligned high performers early

4) Build manager capability before adding layers

5) Decide on what will never be compromised

 

Illuminating Hidden Brilliance

 

Tony Martignetti | Chief Illumination Officer @ Inspired Purpose Partners 🚀

 

Tony is a leadership and workplace culture advisor and change catalyst who helps leaders and teams navigate complexity without losing themselves in the process.

Tony shared deep and rich stories about unlocking the hidden brilliance inside of ourselves. As much an opportunity for leaders in the room to take an introspective peek inside, it is a fantastic way to explore getting the most from your team.

His 4 Ds framework – Discover, Distill, Design, Deliver is a proven coaching framework for uncovering parts of ourselves we turn off, to fit into a role or situation in our lives.

The next time you are holding a career development conversation with someone in your team, dig deep and probe around what sparks of energy they are not currently bringing to the table.

In scale ups, lean is life. This is a great way to maximise the impact a person can make and ensure they feel like they are living out their purpose at work.

 

5 Stage Scale Audit – Workshop

 

 

People building the 0 -> 1’s whilst flying the rocket ship tend to build MVPs as and when they are needed. This leads to nailing some things better than others. On the day this played out with a wide range of maturity levels.

 

Across 5 key pillars we asked the room to audit where they were now + to share what’s worked and what’s not with their peers in small table conversations.

5) Onboarding & Retention

 

They were each provided with a booklet, to help them capture new ideas and honestly reflect on where they are at today.

What followed was rich, open, dialogue and those who had cracked it, sharing and trading with those who haven’t…. yet.

Some of the room also participated in a live poll to see where they were at Vs their peers. Using the booklet and scoring yourself, you can see where you currently sit too.
