Fusion 22 was one of the best events we have been to in a long time. Credit to the Fusion Cluster for organising such a professional and inspiring day. The national science museum in London couldn’t have been a more fitting location.

Key Takeaways:

1. The climate challenge is real! (no surprise there)
2. By 2050 our energy consumption will double!
3. By 2050 we need to reach Net Zero!
4. Funding in fusion is getting serious. 5 Billion so far. 2.5 billion of that in the last 12 months.
5. When we get to Q>1 (net energy gain) expect those who achieve it to IPO. With some big listings.

Key Challenges:

1. Getting to Q>1 (net energy gain) by 2025.
2. Funding. Cracking the holy grail is not cheap.
3. Timeframes. 30 years is too long…need to make in it 10 years.
4. Talent. As this ecosystem hot’s up there will be a real war for talent.

This also got us thinking. Two things holding the holy grail of physics back are money and slow progress. Cue Elon Musk… two things he is pretty good at overcoming.

We know he has commented on this subject before but if he really wants to make an impact on the world it would be incredibly exciting (and a little bit scary maybe) to see what would happen to fusion progress in his hands!!!

Fusion is awesome… one of the most important and coolest projects happening anywhere in the world. We hope the ecosystem cracks it!!!
